HAFIZABAD - International Working Women Day was observed in Hafizabad and Pindi Bhattian in a befitting manner here on Saturday.

While addressing a largely attended gathering at District Complex here, MPA Ch Asad Ullah Arian declared that the Punjab government had taken revolutionary steps for safeguarding fundamental rights and empowerment of women.

He said that working women should continue to play their vital role for the progress and construction of the country side-by-side discharging their domestic obligations.

He further said that no country could progress without the active participation of women and appreciated that women of Pakistan were playing their pivotal role in all sectors.

The PML-N MPA said that the Punjab government had decided to increase recruitment quota for women so as to enable them to pass their lives with respect and dignity and also to supplement family expenses.

Prominent among those who also addressed the gathering included DO Social Welfare Nawaz Gohar, DO Education Samina Yasmeen, the PML-N Women Wing Tehsil Chairperson Rehana Khan and Samaira Ashraf Qazi.

CHEQUE GIVEN: A cheque of Rs25,000 was given to local poet Azam Touqeer of Jalalpur Bhattian by Deputy Director Public Relations Iftikhar Ali Shah on behalf of the Punjab Secretary Information in recognition of his poetry.  Azam Touqeer has thanked the Information Secretary for his noble gesture.

NEW DCO POSTED: Deputy Secretary Education Farah Masood has been posted as District Coordination Officer vice Capt (R) Muhammad Asif proceeded on training about a month back. For the first time in the history of the district a woman officer has been posted as head of the district.

Five fleeing bandits nabbed: The Jalalpur Bhattian Police arrested five bandits involved in dacoity bid here the other day.  According to police, pick-up van driver Shoukat Nazir was returning to his village after dropping lady teachers in their villages. When he reached near Walleki Canal five unidentified people intercepted him.

They snatched the van, cellphone and cash from him.

However, the victim approached the Jalalpur Bhattian Police. The police SHO Malik Ghulam Abbas Khitchi with heavy contingent chased the dacoits and succeeded in arresting Ihsan Ullah, Akhtar Ali, Muhammad Azhar, Muhammad Sadiq and Intizar Hussain.

The police also seized heavy firearms and snatched van. The police have registered a case against them.

Serving the poor earns Allah's pleasure: Acting DCO Sohail Khan declared that serving poor and helpless people tantamount to earning Allah's pleasure.

He was addressing a gathering of volunteers at a function held here to observe International Volunteer Day under the auspices of National Commission for Human Development here the other day.

On the occasion, Programme Manager Sarfraz Ali, Dr Huma Behzad, EDO Education Dr Iqbal Naeem and former Degree College Principal Abdul Rahman Tarar said that Islam taught the service to humanity by imbibing the spirit of sacrifice.

They stressed the need for promotion of volunteer culture by dedicating their lives to serve the humanity. Later, the DCO gave appreciation letters to former MPA Dr Muzaffar Ali Sheikh, District Emergency Officer 1122 Sibghat Ullah, Rescue Officer Shafaqat Ali, President Anjuman-e-Tajran Sheikh Amjad and teachers Union President Abu Bakar Alvi in recognition of their services.

SST teachers' demands promotion: The SST teachers have protested against the delay in their promotion to Subject Specialist for the past two years here the other day. 

In a statement issued here, Teachers Union President Abubakar Alvi said that teachers with the qualification of MA/MSc, working as SST, had applied for their promotion as Subject Specialist in grade-17.

But due to official bottlenecks, their promotion cases have been lying in cold storage for the past two years.

They demanded immediate action to remove sense of deprivation among them.
