ISLAMABAD - Leader of Opposition Syed Khursheed Shah is notified as the member of Public Accounts Committee (PAC) to pave way for his election as chairman of the committee, which is likely to take place on upcoming Wednesday or Thursday.

National Assembly Secretariat has already issued the formal notification and he (Shah) has replaced the Pakistan People’s Party member of the committee Syed Mustafa Shah.

Sources aware of the developments informed The Nation that matter of awarding the slot of chairman PAC remained under discussion and debate in the Pakistan People’s Party for quite sometime, as PPP leadership wanted to grant the slot either to Dr Azra Fazal Pichuho or Syed Naveed Qamar but under the Charter of Democracy signed between the two major political parties in the country — PPP and PML-N — the slot of Chairman PAC could only be given to Leader of Opposition.

Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) was given the slot, as per agreement in Charter of Democracy, after the 2008 general elections and the then Leader of Opposition Ch Nisar Ali Khan became the chairman PAC.

Now PML-N after coming into power has reciprocated the same gesture but they raised objection when the PPP leadership informed the government that they would bring some other party member as Chairman PAC instead of Leader of Opposition.

Sources in the Parliament informed that after some background contacts PPP finally agreed to follow the decisions taken by both the parties in Charter of Democracy and Syed Khursheed Shah was finally nominated for the slot by PPP by dropping the idea of bringing some other person on the slot.

So, in the light of the decision Khursheed Shah was given go-ahead signal from the party high command and he secured the membership of PAC.

Sources in the Parliament informed that the maiden meeting of PAC would be held on coming Wednesday or Thursday wherein the election of its new chairman will formally be made, though it is now just a formality.
