rawalpindi - The testimonies of prosecution witnesses could not be recorded by a customs, anti-smuggling and taxation court in Ayyan Ali currency smuggling case yesterday due to absence of defence lawyer.

The court adjourned the hearing in the case till December 16 with strict order to defence lawyer to appear before court for further proceedings. As many as 11 prosecution witnesses (6 from Pakistan Customs and 5 of Airports Security Force) were present in the courtroom to record their statements against the model Ayyan Ali who was arrested by Pakistan Customs in March 2015 at Benazir Bhutto Islamabad International Airport while trying to smuggle $506800 out of the country.

When Customs, Anti-Smuggling and Taxation Court Special Judge Rana Muhammad Aftab Khan took up the currency smuggling case, Ayyan appeared before the judge along with her lawyer Shaista Wahab. During the proceedings, Ayyan Ali’s counsel informed the court that her client’s indictment has been challenged in high court and the petition has been accepted for hearing. Shaista sought next date for recording of statements of the prosecution witnesses as Sardar Latif Khan Khosa, the lawyer of Ayyan Ali, could not come to the court because of her engagements in Lahore High Court (LHC), Lahore.

On this, the special judge adjourned the hearing till December 16. The judge also directed the lawyer to make sure the presence of Khosa on the next date of hearing. After court hearing, the Pakistan Customs officers, investigators and the eyewitnesses held a meeting in court premises and discussed the situation. Earlier, Ayyan arrived in the court premises wearing black coat and jeans along with her well-built body guards. A large number of her fans and media persons were present there.
