ISLAMABAD: Senate’s Special Committee on Marginalised Segments Friday recommended equal rights for transgender community in a meeting held here at the Parliament House.

The committee said the transgender community should be equally treated like other citizens and they should be provided Computerised National Identity Cards (CNICs) accordingly.

It decided on the proposal of Senator Farhatullah Babar that in the next meeting, representatives of the transgender community would also be invited.

The committee also decided that the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) officials would also be invited in the meeting to discuss the matter related to CNICs of the transgender community.

It also asked the National Commission on Human Rights (NCHR) to brief it in next meeting about the overall performance of the commission.

The committee said the NCHR should brief the committee about the steps taken for the welfare of the marginalised section of the society, including transgender and Kalash community.

It also expressed reservations over the performance of the NCHR.

Minister for Law and Justice Zahid Hamid said CNICs should be issued to the transgender community accordingly as they were equal citizen of the state.
