LAHORE - A local court Friday acquitted a man of the charges of murder after abduction of Rajvinder Kaur, an Indian-Canadian businesswoman.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Irfan Basra announced the acquittal on the benefit of doubt after the prosecution could not establish the case against him.
Kaur, 40, travelled to Lahore from Canada on August 25, 2012 to settle a financial dispute and disappeared. Her father Sikandar Singh Gill lodged an FIR with Sarwar police against two nominated and some unidentified people.
Prime accused Shahid Ghazanfar, alias Karishna Roy is reportedly in the custody of German police. Shahid Ghazanfar is accused of having hired Hafiz Shahzad and his accomplices to kill Kaur.
The complainant’s cousel Aftab Ahmad Bajwa said the acquittal would be challenged. According to Bajwa, the victim reached Lahore from Canada on August 25, 2012 and was killed the same day. He claimed that Kaur was in regular contact with Shahid Ghazanfar, Hafiz Shahzad and others. He alleged the suspect had confessed before a magistrate that they had killed Kaur and threw her body into Khanpur canal on Sheikhupura Road.
