Northern Ireland has been a troublesome area for the United Kingdom. Irish Civil War which was fought during the 1920's, led to the formation of Irish Free State. Later, Northern Ireland was formed. Against this backdrop, the Sunningdale Agreement was signed on 9th of December in 1973. It was a revolutionary agreement as it negotiated the terms of power sharing between Northern Ireland Executive and the Council of Ireland. It was signed at  the Sunningdale Park, hence the name.
