Civic education: A must for our society

Civic education enables citizens to know about their basic rights and responsibilities. It has become a part and parcel of western education in which students at an early age are taught about their role and responsibilities as effective citizens of the country. Thus, the general public in western countries is aware of its moral and social responsibilities as well as fundamental rights that lead to the welfare of the country. On the other hand, citizens of Third World countries largely remain ignorant about their rights and responsibilities and the concept of civic education. As youth is the backbone of a country, they can play a vital role in its progress. If the youth is educated properly, then it can contribute to the progress of the country. Today, it is a pity that a majority of young people are not aware of the spirit of civic education and hence are ignorant about their duties to the state and other citizens. Under the circumstances, this should be made a part of curriculum. HASSAN ALI, Lahore
