According to reports majority of PEMRA staff were inducted into jobs entirely on recommendation of powerful politicians. They were recruited without any proper procedure, there were no tests or interviews done by the Public Service Commission, which constitutes a total breach of merit and negates due process of law and thus their recruitments is illegal. The main result of these improper recruitments have been that PEMRA has functioned most inefficiently and incompetently and reports of corruption abound. For instance, direct-to-home (DTH) satellite TV services, which are a sine qua non in today’s modern world, for public information and entertainment and which should have been started almost a decade ago have been deliberately neglected. It seems due to the influence of cable operators on PEMRA. As a result, 70% of our population, which cannot avail cable service, are forced to buy Indian DTH package through black market, which transfers millions of our dollars to India through smuggling.

Indian DTH agents and our cable operators are the main opponents, working through underhanded means to influence PEMRA, to thwart commencement of Pakistani DTH services. Even small countries like Nepal and Sri Lanka have their own DTH. This is a matter of grave concern for the public who face hardship and waste money and precious foreign exchange, due to the absence of DTH service. The government is requested to set right this matter of great public importance.
