Hundreds of farmers belonging to Ladhana took out a rally on Layyah Road against the closure of a canal and subsequent shortage of irrigation water.

Carrying banners and placards, the protesters marched through various thoroughfares to reach Layyah Road, where they held a demonstration.

Speaking to the protesters, Mohammad Hanif, Mumtaz Ahmed Rana, Abdul Shakoor, and others alleged that the minor has been closed to extort money from the farmers.

Protesters blocked Layyah Road for several hours, leading to suspension of traffic.

The farmers chanted slogans against the irrigation department officers, parliamentarians and urged the government to take notice of the situation.

On the occasion, farmers’ representative Allah Bux said that, farmers of District Layyah are deprived of canal water. He said that their crops are being affected by shortage of water.

He demanded the authorities concerned to increase level of water in canals.

When contacted Irrigation Department, SDO Qazi Ayoub said that the department is trying to provide best services to the farmers. He said that shortage of water in canals is due to low water in rivers and dams.
