LAHORE  - Speakers at a reference paid rich tributes to Prof Tariq Nishtar for his services for promoting medical education in general and for establishing FMH College of Medicine and Dentistry in particular.

The college arranged the ceremony yesterday for paying tributes to one of the founding members of the institution, son of late freedom fighter and poet Sardar Abdul Rab Nishtar.

Prof Khawaja Saadiq Husain, Chairman Board of Management FMH, threw light on the personality and contributions of Prof Tariq Nishtar.

Prof Rakhshanda Rehman, Dean, School of Health Sciences, Fatima Memorial System, gave an overview of illustrious life of Prof Tariq Nishtar that was followed by remarks of two alumni students of FMH College of Medicine and Dentistry.

Mrs Shahima Rehman, Chairperson Executive Committee Fatima Memorial System, talked about the association of Prof Tariq Nishtar with the institution.

Dr Salman Nishtar, Saira Nishtar and Dr Tahira Nishtar, children of Dr Tariq Nishtar spoke about their father and shared their memories. The ceremony ended with a dua for the departed soul.

Prof Tariq Nishtar began his illustrious career in 1966 when he joined Khyber Medical College Peshawar as Assistant Professor and became Professor of Medicine in 1971. He also served as Secretary Health, Social Welfare and Population Planning from 1989 to 1991. He retired from service in 1995, however his contribution to the medical profession and medical services go well beyond his government service.

Prof Tariq Nishtar's association with Fatima Memorial System began when he joined the institution in 1999 to develop the feasibility of FMH College of Medicine & Dentistry. His guidance and presence at every PMDC inspection ensured the smooth running of the medicine and dentistry program.
