KARACHI - Defending champions Wapda and challengers averted semi-final clash in the PIA-sponsored 26th National women's hockey championship when they topped their respective groups points table by defeating their respective opponents here on Saturday at Hockey Club of Pakistan Stadium. Title holders Wapda survived a late charge from Pakistan Army to score narrow 3-2 victory over women soldiers to retain top spot in Group A of the ten-team championship. Aniza Bashir netted two of the three Wapda goals in 29th and 42nd minute while Neelma converted a penalty-corner in between those to goals in 21st minute. Pakistan Army fought back strongly in the last fifteen minutes of the well-contested match but to draw level the match. Rashida reduced the margin in 56th minute of the first half when she found the back of the net through a penalty-corner and eight minutes from time Shamshad got Army's second goal. Last eight minutes were toughly fought by the two teams with Wapda defending well their one goal advantage till the final whistle. Pakistan Railways outplay Punjab Colours: In the other Group B fixture, Railways vying for the top honour of the championship outplayed Punjab Colours 5-2 in league match. Ayesha Bashir had three goals to her credit in 3rd, 38th and 58th minute. Under the FIH definition she scored a hat-trick. Kanwal Aslam had interrupted Ayesha goal scoring when she got a goal in 19th minute and Atifa added the fifth goal in 65th minute for the winners. Punjab Colours got their two goals through Rashida and Asif Zafar. Sindh Whites crush Islamabad: In another fixture of the day, Sindh Whites defeated Islamabad 6-0. Kiran Fatima and Madiha got two goals while Rozina and Farheen one goal each. In the fourth match of the day Punjab Whites had better of Sindh Colours by 2-0 margin. Nimra and Tehmina netted for the visiting team. The group league round will conclude today (Sunday).
