Islamabad-Drug Regularity Authority of Pakistan on Monday directed federal inspectors of drugs in all provinces to recall artificial cattle hormones, an official said.

The Drug Regularity Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) issued recall notification to the FIDs of Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Quetta and Peshawar, intimating them to start taking action against the cattle milk enhancement injections available in the market. The notification said that subject to cancellation of registration of Synthetic Recombinant Bovine Somato-Trohin (RBST) injection, the FIDs are directed to be alert and ensure recalling the product and taking proactive legal action including seizure of the drug in the light of Supreme Court orders.

The DRAP while declaring hormone injections including Boston, Boston-X and Somatic as illegal cancelled their registration. The authority also directed the FIDs to confiscate stock of the said drugs present in the market.

The notification said that deputy attorney general had informed the DRAP that the SC on January 06 had vacated the stay order granted by Sindh High Court (SHC) against the decision of the registration board of the authority regarding cancellation of registration of synthetic RBST injection.

DRAP chief Dr Aslam Afghani had earlier informed The Nation that in 2015, the authority had formed a special committee and held meetings with all stakeholders including farmers, milk companies and livestock owners and agriculture scientists for cancelation of the RBST hormones. Resultantly, the authority cancelled registration of the hormones, declaring it injurious for animals and humans who consumed the hormonal milk.

The mentioned hormones are administered to buffaloes and cows to increase the dairy production, however; medical experts believe that these hormones could lead to increased chances of breast cancer and early puberty in females.

Earlier, it was reported that the mentioned hormones were selling at three times the original prices following the order of the Supreme Court.
