Politics Of Appeasement

Whenever the policy of appeasement takes precedence over principles in politics, the outcomes are disastrous. We have seen how practices of appeasement by our politicians and rulers have created the havoc in the social and political fabric of our society. We are paying the price of such policies in the form of human losses, financial losses, and infrastructural one. Country’s political leadership is reluctant to learn anything from history. For them, remaining in power is the real aim. For this goal, they do not hesitate to cross any limit.

Chief Minister, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pervaiz Khattak right after striking a political alliance with Maulana Samiul Haq’s Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-S) attended a public meeting of Difa-i-Pakistan Council. His action is nothing but the appeasement policy of Tehreek Insaf that is on display for quite some time. The most problematic aspect of the whole political stunt is that CM KPK is probably not even aware of the composition of the Council. It is a conglomeration of political and religious including some with a militant outlook like Hafiz Saeed’s Jamat-u-Dawa. CM KPK’s action will give validity to American rhetoric that even government and institutions of Pakistani state have a soft corner for the likes of Hafiz Saeed.

Whether this act of Pervaiz Khattak is in violation of PTI’s code of conduct? Will Imran chide Pervaiz for not taking him into confidence on the matter? Probably, he will not. In Pakistan, political opportunism rules supreme. Therefore, despite the fact that Imran is a public critic of extremism, he will choose to remain silent as far as such moves guarantee him staying in power.

Considering the past, it is not surprising that CM KPK attended the public meeting that DPC organized. However, without giving a thought to the fact that Hafiz Saeed will speak to the attendees of the gathering depicts that KP’s government is not on the same page with the Federation as far as militancy is concerned.
