ISLAMABAD - As quibbling and speculations are going on within PTI over  Imran Khan’s marriage matter, leaders have raised concerns over the timing of this development.

A group of people within the PTI – one of the major political parties in the country – are questioning the timing of decision while others want clarity weather Imran just proposed Bushra or tied the knot.

When the election drive of PTI is in the top gear, some party leaders are of the view that the marriage decision would damage the electioneering at the moment.

After the statement of Imran that he proposed his spiritual leader Bushra Maneka and waiting for her nod, a number of them are of the view that rumours mills “have gone into overdrive”.

On the other side, some within the party believe that the news about the marriage was ‘absolutely correct’. However, they say that Imran should have publicly declared his marriage.

“Many within the party want clarity over the news as well as a clear announcement from the party chief,” a PTI leader commented.

The news was another blow to newcomers, including former PPP stalwarts, after the disqualification of party secretary general Jahangir Tareen by the Supreme Court in the offshore assets case.

Tareen is said to be instrumental in convincing noted politicians from Punjab, including PPP stalwarts Imtiaz Safdar Warriach, Nazar Muhammad Gondal and Murtaza Javed Satti, to join the PTI.

A PTI leader said on anonymity that though the party was publicly giving a posture that the marriage decision of Imran was his personal matter, the people within the party were very concerned over it, fearing this might give a chance to the rival PML-N to exploit the issue in next election campaign.

“The PML-N will run the campaign that Imran was not a serious kind of politician. Secondly, the party wants clarity on the issue as just speculations are going on within the party over the issue,” he said.

“The PTI chairman has not taken the final decision to marry as it is just a proposal,” said Iftikhar Durrani, head of PTI Central Media Department. He ruled out rumours within party and said just character assassination of the party chief was being carried.

The matter made headlines last week and Imran’s silence on it made it even more puzzling.

According to report, Imran secretly married Bushra in Lahore on January 1. Initially, no one from the PTI confirmed or denied the report, giving rise to more rumours. Later, the PTI leadership gave conflicting and vague ‘explanations’.

The son of Bushra in a TV channel on weekend rejected the report of second marriage of his mother with the PTI chief.

A spokesperson issued a statement quoting the PTI chairman as saying: “To set the record straight, Imran has sent a marriage proposal to Bushra, but she has asked for time to make a final decision after consulting her family, including her children…If and when the proposal is accepted by Bushra for the marriage, Imran will announce it publicly in a proper manner.”

According to the report, Mufti Saeed, a member of PTI core committee, solemnised the nikah on the first day of the New Year. Saeed, a close confidante of Imran, was also the nikah khawan when he publicly married Reham Khan in January 2015.

The cricketer-turned-politician, first married Jemima Khan in 1995 that ended up in 2004. His second marriage was with TV anchor Reham Khan, which survived for 10 months.
