LAHORE  – The Emergency Department of the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) was facing acute shortage of surgeons because only five of them were available to perform cardiac surgeries, hospital sources said.

Despite eight to 10 cardiac surgeries daily and around 2,400 surgeries per year, the patients needing cardiac surgeries have to wait for three to six months.

Sources said that PIC was established in 1989 when the population of Lahore was 3.5 million but now after the passage of 23 years, the City population mounted to around eight million and only 17-bed emergency department is available in the PIC.
