Naveed likely to head PAC

ISLAMABAD- Pakistan People’s Party leader and former federal minister Syed Naveed Qamar is likely to become new chairman Public Accounts Committee (PAC) instead of Leader of Opposition Syed Khursheed Shah.

As expected Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) is all set to offer the slot of chairman PAC to Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly, Syed Khurshid Shah, in line with the Charter of Democracy (CoD) and after accepting the slot Shah is likely to appoint Syed Naveed Qamar as PAC chief.

Sources in the party said that Syed Khurshid Shah considered holding two offices - leader of opposition and chairman PAC - a bit hectic floated the idea that someone else in the party should be given the same. Consequently party leadership has decided to make Syed Naveed Qamar Chairman PAC in case the slot is offered to them. The 2008 government was the first formed after the signing of the CoD by Benazir Bhutto and Mian Nawaz Sharif and as per decision PPPP-led coalition government had doled out the slot of Chairman PAC to Ch Nisar Ali Khan who had run it in extraordinary fashion and not only cleared the backlog of several years and recovered hefty amounts misappropriated by various government departments.

Later, when the matter of the audit of the incumbent government came for scrutiny of the committee, the PPPP government had brought in one of their crony on the slot of Auditor General ofPakistanand Ch Nisar Ali Khan resigned from the slot in protest. And when the Opposition had refused to keep the slot, the government had installed one of their party loyalists as Chairman PAC.

Sources in the government said that PML-N was all set to offer the slot of chairman PAC to the leader of opposition in the National Assembly like they had notified PPPP man as leader of opposition without any delay as agreed in the CoD.
