ISLAMABAD- Islamabad High Court (IHC) has restrained federal government from appointing new chairman of Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA).

The court while adjourning till June 17, 2014 hearing of case filed against appointment of NEPRA acting chairman Pervez Rathore has fixed the other cases of PEMRA members with this case remarking “he should continue to work where he is working”

A single bench of IHC led by Justice Noor ulHaqN Qureshi took up for hearing petition filed by PEMRA private members including Israr Abbasi and Fariha Iftikhar today.

Malik Tahir Mehmood counsel for the petitioners appeared in the court. Rana M Shamim counsel for acting chairman PEMRA Parvez Rathore , Additional Attorney General Tariq  Mehmood Khokhar, DAG Sana Ullah also appeared in the court.

The counsel for the petitioners told the court that two private members of PEMRA  have challenged in the court the notification issued by the government on June 5, 2014 on appointment of Parvez Rathore as acting chairman PEMRA . This notification is illegal, he argued.

The petitioners prayed the court to grant stay order against this appointment. The court remarked “the other cases of PEMRA are pending hearing in this court. It is better all the cases be heard in one day. Acting chairman NEPRA Parvez Rathore’sposition will remain intact till the decision of the court.

The court adjourned the hearing of the case till June, 17 2014.
