LAHORE - Senior PPP leader Khalid Ghurki died here on Tuesday due to renal failure. He was around 60. Late Ghurki was under treatment at Sheikh Zayed Hospital for the last over several months. He was husband of Federal Minister for Environment and PPPs Lahore President, Samina Khalid Ghurki. A close associate of President Asif Ali Zardari, Khalid Ghurki entered active politics in late 1980s when Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto retuned to country from exile. He was nominated partys Lahore President in 1989 and occupied this office till 1991. In 1993 general elections, he was elected MNA from Lahore and was appointed Parliamentary Secretary for Railways by Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto. The deceased was a good orator in the Punjabi language. He lost his one leg at a party meeting when he was PPPs Lahore President as a result of an accidental firing at Jehangir Badrs residence. His father, Ch Asghar Ghurki was also in politics from PPP platform, and was elected MNA in 1988. He died soon after and his eldest son, Arshad Ghurki was elected from the same constituency in a bye-election.
