Waheeda’s town shuts down to protest EC ban

TANDO MUHAMMAD KHAN - Adnan Khatri - A complete strike was observed in Tando Muhammad Khan on Thursday in protest against the Election Commission’s decision to disqualify PPP candidate Waheeda Shah for slapping the polling staff.
A large number of PPP activists, carrying banners and placards, took out protest demonstrations from Waheeda Shah’s bungalow and reached the Press Club after marching through different areas. The activists also burnt tyres at Hyderabad-Badin Road. They chanted slogans against the Chief Election Commissioner.
Strict security arrangements were made and police personnel were deployed at main roads and crossings to avert any untoward incident.
All the major markets and bazaars remained closed while traffic remained thin.
On February 25, Waheeda Shah lapped Presiding Officer Habiba Memon and Assistant Presiding Officer Shagufta Memon in a polling station of PS-53 Tando Mohammad Khan in presence of a DSP.
In a landmark verdict, the Election Commission had disqualified PPP’s candidate for two years and declared her election in PS-53 null and void.
Meanwhile, PPP Tando Muhammad Khan President Haji Amin Lakho has strongly condemned the Election Commission’s decision against Waheeda Shah. He was speaking at a news conference.
He blamed the media and said that the issue was not such as media has shown it on the TV channels. He termed it a ‘media trial’.
Advocate Muhammad Ali Qureshi, Ali Akbar Khaskheli, Mehboob Notkani, Irshad Memon and others were present on the occasion.
They said that people of Tando Muhammad Khan and PPP workers have reacted to the verdict, but we respect institutions.
