Shiffrin retains slalom skiing's crystal globe

ARE - America's women's Olympic slalom champion Mikaela Shiffrin won the World Cup race in the discipline at Are, Sweden, on Saturday to retain her crystal globe title. The 18-year-old -- also world champion in the event -- recorded her fourth win of the season and eighth in World Cup races. She beat home favourite Sweden's Maria Pietilae-Holmner by 60hundreths of a second while another Swede Anna Swenn-Larsson was third, 1.5sec adrift from the leader, for her first ever podium finish at the age of 22. Germany's Maria Hoefl-Riesch finished seventh which was enough to see her regain the lead in the race for the overall World Cup title. She leads Austrian Anna Fenninger by 29 points heading into the World Cup finals in Lenzerheide, Switzerland, next week.–AFP
