KARACHI - Despite massive damages inflicted on the Pakistan Railway (PR) following the assassination of Benazir Bhutto on December 27 2007, the net profit of the department's Karachi division soared up to Rs 580 million in the last eleven months against that witnessed in the same period in previous year. While the income earned from local trains stood at Rs 0.4 million in the period under review, reflecting sharp decline, said Divisional Commercial Officer Karachi Division Kashif Rasheed Yousufani on Thursday. Talking to The Nation, he said that revenue of PR Karachi division has jumped up to Rs 52 million in the said period as compared to that recorded in the corresponding period of last year. The earnings of both sections included passenger and freight of PR Karachi division recorded Rs 52m and Rs50m respectively, in the period under review. It will worth mentioning here that a number of trains for upper country had been suspended due to riots erupted following the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. Since resuming the railway service a week after 17 trains for up country are running out of 27 allocated trains, while two local trains are also running. The official further said that the Karachi Division has sent a proposal to Lahore head quarter of PR recently, therefore, much profit, around Rs 300 million, is likely to be earned next year provided the proposal accepted. Commenting on the profit gained this year, he said that they have a strategy for getting revenue increased like, firstly, they would control the problem of free-travelling on fake tickets or without tickets, and secondly the policy regarding the usefulness of the trains, decrease and increase of coaches, would also be implemented according to the travelling ratio. Talking about the local trains, he expressed his dissatisfaction over the revenue generated through local trains, and said that only Rs 0.4 million was earned. He said that preventing the passengers to travel without tickets in local trains is not possible as the local trains take stop at several places where the passengers take on the trains and after a few miles then they take off without paying tickets. He also revealed that keeping the loss through local trains in view the department has also sent a proposal to Lahore head office to privatise the local trains system. To a query about restoration of the suspended trains, he told that until the rehabilitation of the signal system train service could not be resumed. He added that the equipments for installing the digital signal system are not available in the country, thus the higher ups have been approached to import the equipments.
