LAHORE - The 8th Royal Palm Amateur Golf Team Trophy and Challenge Shield Championship will commence today (Friday) here at the Royal Palm Golf Course.

Speaking at the press briefing, General Manager of Royal Palm Golf and Country Club Omer Mir said: “In a championship of this level, the venue and the playing arena have an extremely important role to play. Without doubt the golf course is admirably splendid in appearance, with fairways, greens and the multitude variety of age old trees making the competing golfers feel blissful.”

Spelling out the history of the championship, Director Golf Col (r) Jameel Khalid stated that this tournament had been an annual event of the golf calendar but was abandoned in 2000. “Royal Palm Golf & Country Club reintroduced the event in 2006 based on its unique format where club teams get an opportunity to compete against each other in an effort to bring honours to their parent club.”

He added that in this championship, the events at stake were Royal Palm team trophy, gross cup, net challenge shield and an event for ladies. “The Royal Palm Team Trophy will be contested over three rounds, with final round to be played on Sunday. Golf clubs from across the country have fielded their teams while the major clubs like Lahore Gymkhana, Lahore Garrison and Royal Palm have entered two four member teams.”

“As for format of the team competition, on each day of play, the best three gross scores of each team will be counted towards the final aggregate team total at the end of three days of tournament play,” Col Jameel asserted.

“In the $individual competition for the gross cup, players with a handicap of 12 and below are eligible to participate. Running in conjunction with the main team trophy, the gross cup will be contested over the three tournament days.”

Director Media Tournament Khawaja Pervaiz Saeed said that the challenge shield was on net score. “In this event also players with handicap of 12 and below are eligible. The shield will be contested on the first two days of the tournament. Based on handicap scores, a wide range of players will be in contention for this title.” He further said that in all, around 130 golfers would be contesting for their personal and clubs glory.
