ISLAMABAD - Information Ministry on Friday moved a summary of Executive Member of Pakistan Electronic Regularity Authority (PEMRA) Kamal-ul-Din Tipu as new acting chairman of Authority, The Nation has learnt.

Former acting chairman Pervaiz Rahtore retired from the post after reaching the age of superannuation on Friday. The federal government appointed Mr. Rathore as acting chairman on June 0 4, 2014; he had also served in PEMRA as a member of authority's board earlier.

Sources in Information Ministry informed that Secretary Information Muhammad Azam has forwarded a summary of Tipu to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for his appointment as new acting chairman PEMRA. The PM will advise President Memnoon Hussain to approve appointment of Tipu as acting Chairman of the authority.

Sources mentioned that the federal government was not interested to appoint a permanent chairman of PEMRA and Information Ministry did not make efforts for this purpose. The ministry did not advertise the post despite the fact that Pervaiz Rathore would retire on May 08, 2015.

Kamal-ul-din Tipu belongs to the Police Services of Pakistan group and the central selection board also recommended his name for promotion into grade 21 on Tuesday. Tipu had already served in PEMRA Lahore as General Manager. He would be the second PSP officer who is expected to take charge as acting Chairman PERMRA. Mr. Rathore also belongs to the Police Services of Pakistan.

PEMRA is an electronic media watchdog which is responsible to ensure implantation of PEMRA code of conduct in the country. Sources in Information Ministry said that the government wanted to make PEMRA more powerful to ensure check and balance on electronic media after the hate speech of Muttahida Qaumi Movement Chief Altaf Hussain against armed forces on April 30, 2015.
