The federal cabinet, in its latest meeting on October 31, has approved an MoU on financial information sharing between the US and Pakistan. Will the US government have access to bank account information of all Pakistanis if this agreement takes place? Will somebody sitting in Washington DC be able to see details of all our banking transactions and where we use our credit and debit cards? There are many potentially harrowing implications of financial information sharing and some of these impinge on the basic rights of Pakistanis. Therefore, it is incomprehensible that a democratic government can allow such a thing without sharing the details with the public and having a public discussion on the issue.
