MIRPUR (AJK) - The European Union (EU) will provide 2.5 million Euros to the Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) as grant to improve training infrastructure for Wapda employees, official sources revealed.

“This grant will be spent for up-gradation of Hydel Training Centre Mangla. The French development agency, AFD, is also providing 1.5 million Euros for the purpose”, sources told this correspondent late Thursday.

Mangla Hydel Training Centre, the exclusive training facility for hydel engineers and the staff, was established in 1977. Since there were a few hydel generating units at that time, scope of the centre was also limited with only two technical courses - one each for newly recruited Junior Engineers and the technical staff.  The Wapda continued to expand scope of the centre with more and more hydel power stations/generating units coming on line subsequently.

At present, Mangla Hydel Training Centre conducts 20 different courses for engineers, technical and other allied staff, and engineering students. Wapda plans to upgrade Mangla Hydel Training Centre to impart training to employees as per international standards, so that maintenance level and efficiency of hydel power stations could be further improved and forced outages of power generation.

units reduced considerably. For the purpose, a new infrastructure for the Centre is being developed in addition to establishing six modern labs equipped with state-of-the-art gadgets. These include electrical engineering, electronics engineering, instrumentation and control, mechanical engineering, hydraulic engineering and computer labs. The task of upgrading the Centre is scheduled to be completed in about one year.
