Nicole Kidman found her return to the stage “horrific”, but now feels a great deal of exhilaration. The 48-year-old actress has been in countless big films over the years - The Others, The Paperboy and Cold Mountain to name just a few.
She’s also dabbled in theatre and this year made her stage comeback in London’s West End production of Photograph 51. It had been more than 15 years since Nicole acted live and she certainly felt the nerves when returning.
“Oh, horrific and terrifying. I don’t think I could go through it again,” she told actor Chiwetel Ejiofor when he asked her how her stage comeback felt during an interview for Britain’s Harper’s Bazaar magazine. “The adrenaline is just unbearable. I don’t know how athletes run races in the Olympics. I think that fear factor has got worse as I’ve gotten older.
“There wasn’t a lot of excitement at that point - I had a strong case of stage fright. Now there’s a lot of exhilaration. But I just pushed myself on, which is what I tend to do in life anyway. Like there’s no way out.” Nicole and Chiwetel have teamed up for a remake of Argentine movie The Secret in Their Eyes, which follows two detectives who return to an unresolved case. The pair took the time to discuss their new-found friendship in the interview, with the Australian actress recalling when they first met.
“Chiwetel, you won’t remember, but I first met you at the Academy Awards last year (14),” she reminisced, with the actor responding: “I enjoyed the Oscars much more when I was presenting than when I was nominated, because it’s not as stressful. You can enjoy the spectacle of it.” Chiwetel was nominated for best actor for his role in 12 Years a Slave at the 2014 ceremony and presented at this year’s event.
