October 8, 2005 was the darkest day in the history of Pakistan. The country was hit by a deadly earthquake, that too in the holy month of Ramazan (month of blessings), and we still have not recovered from its aftermath. While now for the past one and a half-year Pakistan is going through a terrible period. We are facing severe crisis on many fronts. Foremost, not only has the country has been rocked by suicide bombings which has resulted in the loss of thousands of innocent lives, there is a grave and critical situation in the tribal areas as well. Then there has been acute shortage of electricity and wheat with a predicted one of gas in the coming winters. Prices of consumer items, petrol and gold are astronomical. The value of rupee has depreciated greatly with dollar and pound reaching the highest. While the latest addition is the devastating bomb blast in Islamabad leaving Marriott Hotel in ruins. On the surface it may seem as though various social, political or economic factors are responsible for the present state-of-affairs, while we also may lay blame on Indians, Americans and the Taliban, but have you ever really wondered why all this is happening? We all know that no one can cause us any harm as long as Allah is watching over us. Then why are we targets of such horrible circumstances? Now let me provide the answer: This is the wrath of Allah on a nation that is disobedient. That has failed to follow the path and the guidelines prescribed by Him. That has rejected His Signs, time and time again. That is why If you study the Holy Quran you will find that every nation that adopted sinful ways, simply perished. The stories of nations, to which prophets such as Hazrat Nooh, Lut, Hud, Salih, Shoaib were sent are great examples to learn from. It is stated that "Verily never will Allah change the condition of a people until they change it themselves (with their own souls). But when (once) Allah willeth a people's punishment there can be no turning it back nor will they find besides Him, any to protect" (13:11). We have become socially and morally unscrupulous. We indulge in all sorts of wrong activities such as profiteering, hoarding, indecency, adultery, bribery and gambling to name a few. We are doing everything that is against our religion, in the name of modernity. It is stated that "Those who desire the life of the world and its glitter, to them We shall pay in full (the price of) their deeds therein without diminution therein. They are those for whom there is nothing in the Hereafter but the Fire: vain are the designs they frame therein and of no effect are the deeds that they do" (11:15-16). Whenever something happens, all we do is grieve for some time, speculate on How and Why for some time and then go back to our old ways, not thinking for a moment, what our course of action as a society should be We might claim that we are good Muslims, having a strong faith, but be honest, take a look inside and really ask yourselves if that is true. We, who can't even follow the basics of our religion, for how many of us offer five prayers a day? Or recite the Holy Quran regularly or have read and tried to understand its meaning? I believe that the only way that we can overcome the present situation is to repent wholeheartedly and seek His forgiveness. If we want Allah to continue his mercy and his blessings then we have to change. We must mend our ways, and seriously question ourselves that what is our relation with Allah? Because if we want this country to exist, we must re-establish our connection with Him. The path that we are treading today, will very soon lead us to complete destruction. For the time being Allah is giving us chances, therefore it is imperative that we realise what we are doing before it is too late as it is stated that "Of no effect is the repentance of those who continue to do evil until death faces one of them," and he says "Now have I repented indeed" (4:18).
