ISLAMABAD - Pakistan hopes the Obama Administration, keeping in view Pakistans reservations about clauses included in the Kerry Lugar bill that questioned its national security and sovereignty, will make suitable amendments in the Kerry Lugar bill. During the weekly press briefing, spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abdul Basit said the Kerry Lugar bill is not a bilateral agreement so it is not necessary for government of Pakistan to agree with all of its clauses. As a matter of fact, Abdul Basit told media men that US government did not consult Pakistan while drafting the Kerry Lugar bill, so the bill must not be considered as a negotiated document; rather it is a piece of legislation drafted by the US Congress. Let me make it clear to you all that Pakistan is not bound to accept it, he added. We will not compromise on sovereignty of the country while Pakistans national interests will be defended at any cost, Foreign Office Spokesperson Basit told the media men during press briefing held in premises of Foreign office on Thursday. The spokesperson admitted that the PakistanArmy has expressed some reservation over the bill. However, he said the Obama Administration was fully aware about position of Pakistan over the Kerry Lugar bill and we hope it will abolish the clauses included in the bill that are against the National interest and sovereignty of Pakistan directly or indirectly. Abdul Basit told media men that the US Administration reserves the right to return any bill to the US-Senate. We hope that Obama administration, keeping in view Pakistans reservations regarding national security and sovereignty, will make suitable amendments in the Kerry Lugar bill. When questioned, he said the Government of Pakistan fully reserved the right either to accept the Kerry Lugar Bill or to reject it. Answering a query Abdul Basit said stance of the Foreign Office is like that of Prime Ministers statement. It is worth mentioning here that the Prime Minister told parliamentarians on Wednesday that the government would reach a decision after taking the opposition into confidence over Kerry Lugar Bill. Talking about Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT), Basit said nuclear capability, national security and defence of the country are inter-related. Signing of NPT will prove lethal for Pakistan, so I want to make it clear to you all that we will not join NPT, Basit asserted.
