SYED MOHAMMAD TAHIR LAHORE - World Egg Day is being observed today (Friday) with the slogan Khaeen Do Anday Rozana, Rahein Tandrust-o-Tawana (Take two eggs a day to keep you healthy and strong) to highlight the importance and raise awareness about the nutritional benefits of egg for human being, particularly for pregnant women and children. In this connection, different seminars, symposium and workshops are being held across the country under the auspices of Pakistan Poultry Association (PPA) Northern Zone including a seminar here at Lahore Press Club. Egg consumers along with other stakeholders will attend the seminar where speakers will highlight the importance of chicken eggs for common man particularly for children and pregnant women. Chicken eggs are generally considered a good source of protein and choline for human body. That is why, chicken egg falls in the meats category under the Food Guide Pyramid. The egg also help provide all essential amino acids to human body and supply several vitamins and minerals, including vitamin A, riboflavin, folic acid, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, choline, iron, calcium, phosphorus and potassium. They also considered an inexpensive single-food source of protein. Cooked eggs are easier to digest as well as having a lower risk of salmonella infection. More than half of the calories found in eggs, come from the fat in the yolk while a 100-gram chicken egg contains approximately 10 grams of fat. People on a low-cholesterol diet may need to reduce egg consumption. However, only 27pc of the fat in egg is saturated fat (Palmitic, Stearic and Myristic acids) that contains LDL cholesterol. The egg white consists primarily of water (87pc) and protein (13pc) and contains no cholesterol and little, if any, fat. Health experts advise people to refrigerate eggs, use them within two weeks, cook them thoroughly and never consume raw eggs. As with meat, containers and surfaces that have been used to process raw eggs should not come in contact with ready-to-eat food. The eggs not only have enormous quantity of the nutritional value but eggs are also tremendously economical. You can nourish your family and yourself an allocation of the delicious and nutritious eggs for few rupees. It will also make you to have the good feeling that you are able to serve up your family with a hot- home- cooked food in only few minutes. In an attempt to eat the nutritionally enrich and affordable diet during the World Egg Day, just try to incorporate some of the eggs in your coming meal. There are some of the ways by which we can make World Egg Day a success. Parents should give daily meals to their respective kids which include eggs while government should take measures to increase not only the production of chicken meat but also eggs in the country at affordable prices so that common people could get maximum benefit out of it. In this way we can celebrate World Egg Day in a befitting and unique manner and could have opportunity to help raise awareness of the benefits of eggs amongst the masses. The event is celebrated on second Friday of Oct throughout the world every year.
