Supremacy of the parliament

It was interesting to listen to Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, leader of the opposition, berating the government for hurried legislation in the National Assembly. He also said that the government invariably rushes through legislation whenever a minimum number of lawmakers are present. True, this is not the best way of legislation, but the fact remains that the fault also lies with Mr Nisar and his party. The question is why they are not insisting on maintaining the quorum in the August House. It is a pity that the majority of the legislators usually shy away from attending the house proceedings. Unfortunately, the public is used to seeing empty hall of the National Assembly and the Senate. Unless the members enthusiastically and regularly take part in the proceedings, with keen eye for detail, the government will try to manipulate the legislation process. The parliaments supremacy is only asserted through the work of legislators primarily inside the house through all the available avenues, including standing committees. DAUD MALIK, Rawa-lpindi, October 8.
