Bhasha Dam, at last

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilanis announcement in the National Assembly on Friday that the second groundbreaking of Bhasha Dam would be held on October 18 did not impress many for obvious reasons. The members inside the assembly were more worried about the energy riots and one of them even argued that if the government could considerably decrease the supply and demand gap in just a few hours by paying the IPPs their dues, it meant that the crisis was artificial. There is besides a general impression that the construction of Bhasha Dam is a step that is too little too late. It is common knowledge that it is being built at the cost of countrys lifeline Kalabagh Dam, as a totally false impression is being given that it will be a good substitute. Bhasha may have its own plus points, but it certainly does not match the numerous advantages offered by Kalabagh. Also it has been reported that the terrain is earthquake-prone, making Bhasha inappropriate for a large reservoir and that it would not be able to provide much protection against flood and monsoon rains up in the north. On the other hand, Kalabaghs feasibility says that its construction site is the most ideal for the storage of a huge quantity of water and it would minimise the damage caused by floods. Apart from producing cheap electricity, it would remain silt-free for hundreds of years. Ignoring Kalabagh Dam would be a disaster.
