New Delhi- India's defense minister has accused Pakistan of unprovoked attacks on Indian-controlled Kashmir, and warned of heavy retaliation.
"If Pakistan persists with this adventurism, then our forces will continue to fight, and the cost of this adventurism will be unaffordable," Arun Jaitley told reporters in New Delhi.
Praising the armed forces, Jaitley said, "Our armed forces have been doing a commendable job in face of unprovoked attacks from Pakistan".
"There have been a series of unprovoked ceasefire violations by Pakistan, mostly on the international border and some along the LoC. Pakistan should stop this unprovoked firing and shelling if it wants peace on the border,” he added.
"There is a connection between firing and infiltration. Firing covers infiltration. India has never been aggressor but it has a paramount duty to defend its people and territory," said Jaitley.  
Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said, "I want to assure the people that we will not let down our country," a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted that "everything will be fine soon" on the Pakistan border. "The Prime Minister is keeping a close eye on the situation. He does not need to speak as our Army and BSF personnel are giving a befitting response and we are satisfied with it," Rajnath Singh added.
A total of nine Pakistani and eight Indian civilians have been killed since fighting erupted more than week ago along a 200km stretch of border in the disputed Kashmir region.
