Bangladesh on verge of innings defeat in first Test

KINGSTOWN - Bangladesh were on the verge of another complete collapse at 110 for four in their second innings at lunch on the fourth day of the first Test against the West Indies at the Arnos Vale Stadium in St Vincent on Monday. With the home side enforcing the follow-on as expected at the start of the day's play, the tourists go into the afternoon session still 192 runs away from avoiding an innings defeat.
Only Tamim Iqbal has so far offered any substantial resistance to the West Indies varied attack, with left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn again featuring prominently. It was the gangling Barbadian's dismissal of Tamim for 53 just before the interval that has effectively extinguished any hopes the visitors would have had of a heroic rearguard. They will resume with skipper Mushfiqur Rahim and all-rounder Mahmudullah facing the onerous task of defying a West Indies attack in which the fast bowlers are well rested and will be expected to be available and firing on all cylinders should the spinners be held up for any length of time in pursuit of victory.
Shamsur Rahman was the only wicket to fall to the faster bowlers as a careless drive at Kemar Roach offered a straightforward catch to wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin with the opener just on four. Imrul Kayes counter-attacked briefly in a promising 70-run second-wicket stand with Tamim before the introduction of Chris Gayle brought about his demise via a lazy drive at the part-time bowler for Kirk Edwards to take the catch at short extra-cover and send the batsman back to the pavilion for 25. At the other end, Tamim continued to mix watchful defiance with full-blooded attack, hoisting three sixes, the third of which took him to his 15th Test half-century. But it was at that point that Benn made his impact, drawing Mominul Haque into a loose drive to be caught at the wicket and then bowling Tamim through the gate with a delivery that spun in sharply to the left-hander.
