Sindh to have 60 chest pain units

Karachi - The National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD), in collaboration with the Government of Sindh, has decided to establish 60 more state-of-the-art Chest Pain Units across the Sindh province in fiscal year 2018-19 to facilitate patients with chest pain.

The new Chest Pain Units would be established throughout the province in a year out of which 20 will be set up in Karachi and 40 in different localities of interior Sindh. Each unit will be equipped with appropriate diagnostic testing facilities to identify patients with an acute heart attack. The will also have equipment to resuscitate patients who become unstable.

The CPUs are designed for providing preliminary emergency care to heart attack patients. After providing initial treatment, the patients will be shifted immediately to the tertiary care set up at NICVD Cath Lab.

Chief Operating Officer at National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases(NICVD) Azra Maqsood said NICVD had introduced a new era of heart healthcare with the launch of its first Chest Pain Unit almost one and half year back. The NICVD has established seven Chest Pain Units under flyovers at Gulshan Chowrangi, Gulbai Flyover, Malir Halt, Qayyumabad Chowrangi, NaganChowrangi, a clinic near II Chundrigar Road and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Institute of Cardiology at Sindh Government Lyari General

She informed that seven Chest Pain Units have been serving people successfully and treating hundreds of patients on daily basis. This service is one of its kinds and is available 24/7 throughout the year.

COO Azra Maqsood said NICVD in collaboration with the Sindh government had decided to establish 60 more chest pain units in all over the Sindh province out of which 20 would be set up in Karachi and 40 in reset of the province. She said aim of launching chest paint units in the province was to provide state-of-the-art cardiac treatment to the people of Sindh.

She said that these units had been designed to provide quality initial emergency care to heart attack patients and teams of all these units would work to save lives round the clock. She said NICVD was committed to provide state-of-the-art cardiac treatment to the people of Sindh province at their doorsteps free of cost.

She further informed that NICVD was introducing heart surgeries including coronary artery bypass graft, arrhythmia surgery, aortic valve surgery and congenital heart surgery in NICVD Larkana and Tando Muhammad Khan after completion work on Operation Theatres (OTs). She said heart surgeries were already being performed in National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases Karachi and Sukkur.
