Supply of sewage-mixed water irks people

NANKANA SAHIB - Adequate supply of fresh and clean drinking water is the basic need for people but unfortunately people living in different localities of the city are deprived of this basic need.
According to detail, people of several areas in town are badly suffering shortage of pure drinking water as water supplied by the TMA is contaminated and not fit for human consumption.
The situation has continued for about many months as water pipelines, mostly running along drains, developed leaks through which liquid wastes get mixed with the water.
The worst affected areas are Housing Colony, Purana Nankana, Madina colony and Bhatiya where groundwater and surface water are now contaminated with heavy metals. In these areas water gets contaminated in many different ways, some of the most common reasons being leaky water pipe joints in areas where the water pipe and sewage line pass close together. The residents of these area complain that drinking water supply is getting mixed with sewerage posing danger to the public health as it could cause outbreak of epidemic.
They said that the district government had turned a deaf ear to the complaints of the people although dozens of people had got different diseases including Muhammad Zaman, Muhammad Alam, Mudasar Mushtaq, Asma Ghulam Rasool , Jabbar Ahmed and others. They appealed to Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to take action against officers concerned involved in the negligence.
On the other hand, TMO Ch Amjad said that staff was going to repair such pipelines soon.
