Women team camp in October

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan women hockey team head coach Olympian Saeed Khan will conduct a training camp for the women team for upcoming Women Hockey Asia Cup from the third week of this month.

Pakistan Women hockey team will participate in the Asia Cup Hockey Championship in Thailand in October this year. Talking to The Nation on Tuesday, he regretted that no heed was paid to women hockey in the past and praised current Pakistan Hockey Federation management for paying attention towards promotion of women hockey.

Saeed said revival of women hockey is at initial stage and it will take some time before fully restoring the activities related to women hockey. He said departments will hire female players to form their teams, which would take part in the national championships along with provinces. “We would shortlist 35 players for the training camp for the coming Asia Women Hockey Championship. I am quite pleased having seen such talented players participating in the 29th Women National Hockey Championship and around 150 players participated in the event, which is an encouraging sign.”

He said the women championship has been organised after a gap of three years and hoped that PHF president Brig (R) Khalid Sajjad Khokhar and secretary Olympian Shahbaz Senior would pay special attention to conduct more male and female events as well as arranging foreign tours for them.

About the available talent, Saeed said he has witnessed some special talent, to whom special attention would be paid along with top class training to turn them into one of the best in business.

He also requested private and corporate sector to step forward to finance the PHF to help them achieving the goal of reclaiming the lost hockey glory.
