LAHORE Thousands of litres of artificial milk prepared in Okara is being sold in the market, head of an important scientific institution of the government told a delegation of federal legislators here on Thursday. According to him, injurious ingredients including formalin, detergents, dry milk and urea were being used in the artificial milk. Director General of the Pakistan Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (PCSIR), Lahore, Dr Shahzad Alam made the startling disclosure while briefing the members of National Assembly Standing Committee on Science and Technology. The PCSIR chief said 99 percent milkmen were also using formalin for the purpose of preserving the milk, which was very harmful to human health. The committee members asked the DG to give more details about the artificial milk. Thereupon, he called Chief Scientific Officer of Food Research Centre Dr Sakhawat and asked him to brief the legislators. However, he could not answer their questions, and was told by the committee to come up with more details on Friday. It may be pointed out there are reports that packed milk being marketed is not safe for human consumption. Although the courts took a notice of the matter the situation remains unchanged. The meeting at the PCSIR was chaired by Dr Abdul Kadir Khanzada while only eight out of total 16 members were present. They were Shamshad Sattar Bachani, Justice (r) Fakhar-un-Nisa Khokher, Anusha Rahman Khan Advocate, Malik Shakeel Awan, Akram Masih Gill, Begum Shahnaz Sheikh and Jamshaid Ahmed Dasti. Talking to media Dr Abdul Kadir said a sub-committee will be constituted to probe into the issue after briefing and discussion on artificial and adulterated milk on Friday. He said the research and development activities of PCSIR were not matching the countrys requirements. The committee members directed the DG to publish annual progress report and researches conducted by the institute and put them on website.
