ISLAMABAD (APP) Indian Ambassador Meera Shankar was removed and patted down by an American security agent at airport in Mississippi, despite being informed about her diplomatic status, prompting the New Delhis mission in Washington to strongly protest against the incident. The incident took place at Jackson-Evers International Airport a few days back where sari-clad Shankar was about to board a flight to Baltimore after attending the Mississippi State Universitys programme, an Indian television channel reported Thursday. Quoting Indian embassy officials, the report said Shankar, escorted by a Mississippi Development Authority representative and an airport security officer, presented her diplomatic papers to officials but the witnesses said she was subjected to the hands-on search. She was first taken to a VIP waiting room and later removed from the queue consisting passengers lined up for security check and patted down by a female agent of Transportation Security Administration. According to the witnesses, the security agents told Shankar that she was singled out because of wearing a sari. This is for the first time that Shankar, who always has been seen wearing a sari, had to undergo body search in the US. After arriving in Washington as Indias top diplomat, she has been travelling a lot inside the US and giving lectures to universities. An Indian official said the embassy would raise the issue with the State Department.
