ISLAMABAD Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has commended the officers and men of Pakistan Army for their support to the people in recovering from the effects of recent unprecedented floods. He made these remarks during a special briefing given to him by the Corps Commander Multan Lt Gen Shafqaat Ahmed on Operation Labbaik held at Multan Garrison on Thursday. Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani also attended. While referring to the magnitude of the natural calamity, Shahbaz Sharif said that had the Pakistan Army not taken leading role in rescue, relief and rehabilitation effort, civil administration would not have been able to surmount this challenge. Well-placed sources told TheNation that Chief Minister also extolled the Army Chief General Kayani for his able leadership in mobilising Pakistan Army well in time and successfully surmounted the challenge. Measures to improve response during such disaster were also discussed during the briefing, an ISPR press release issued here said. It said that Gen Kayani besides laying floral wreath at Yadgar-e-Shuhada, also addressed officers of Multan Garrison, and dilated upon the security challenges confronting the country and the region. Political sources have attached great significance to the Thursdays interaction between Gen Kayani and Shahbaz Sharif, who is also a key leader of the PML-N, as it was the first after the WikiLeaks reports. However, ISPR sources remained noncommittal over these notions. One of the diplomatic cables released by the WikiLeaks had contained remarks attributed to Gen Kayani regarding PML-N leader and two-time former Prime Minister Nawaz. Consequently, Pakistan Army had to clarify its position saying Gen Kayani always keeps all the political leaders including Nawaz Sharif in high esteem.
