LAKKI MARWAT - The district health department has formed 421 teams to immunise 144,857 children below the age of five years against polio in the forthcoming anti-polio drive starting from December 17, said EDO health Dr Abdul Ghaffar Wazir on Sunday.

Talking to this correspondent on telephone, he said that 361 teams would launch door-to-door campaign while 42 teams would be present in hospitals and other health facilities to administer oral polio vaccines to kids. He said that polio teams would also be deployed at 18 transit points in the district to vaccinate children travelling along with their parents in public transport vehicles. 

He said that local police authorities had been requested through district administration to deploy policemen at transit points so as to help health workers in the process of kids’ immunisation by stopping passenger vehicles for them. Ghaffar claimed that all sorts of arrangements had been finalized to make polio eradication campaign a success.

He called upon the people especially parents to cooperate with polio teams and safeguard their children from deadly epidemic by administering them with anti polio drops. He also asked the parents to take their children to a nearby health facility for immunization against crippling disease or inform local health authorities if in case polio teams could not reach their houses.

He added that the district health department was in touch with clerics, teachers, members of civil society and social activists besides union council level polio eradication committees had been activated to ensure coverage of refusal cases and overcome the obstacles in high-risk union councils.
