Assassins among 47 suspects rounded up

KARACHI – Law-enforcement agencies apprehended as many as 47 suspects, among them assassins and gamblers, in targeted operations in various parts of the metropolis on Sunday.In raids on Ghas Mandi, Surjani and Korangi’s Bilal Colony, the Rangers took into custody 39 suspects and shifted them to an undisclosed location for further questioning. Over a thousand Rangers personnel carried out the operations.In the first raid on a gambling den in Ghas Mandi area early on Sunday, the Rangers managed to apprehend about 15 suspects. Notorious gamblers, Ejaz Memon and Haji Ashiq, managed to escape before the arrival of the raiding team. According to the paramilitary force, most of the arrested persons were gamblers and over 250 bottles of wine were also recovered from them. In the next raid on Surjani area, the Rangers nabbed nine suspects, including a killer and an arms supplier. The arrested killer had links with a political party, but his identity and political affiliation was not disclosed. In a two-hour-long operation in Bilal Colony, a heavy contingent of the Rangers apprehended 15 suspects, including four hardened criminals.According to a spokesperson for the Rangers, 59 weapons of different calibre, including sub-machine guns, MP-5, rifles, pistols, armour piercing bullets, satellite phones, daggers, telescopes, binocular and laser range finder, were seized during the operation from the arrested suspects.Separately, the Crime Investigation Department claimed to have arrested an alleged killer, namely Yasin, and his five accomplices in a raid on Zaman Town. SP Mazhar Mashwani said the raid was conducted on a tip-off. He said the suspected killer belonged to a political party, adding that he was also involved in killing of two people in Zaman Town. The officer also claimed to have recovered a Kalashnikov and three pistols from him.Meanwhile, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) detained two men in a raid on Jamshed Quarters area. According to sources, the raid was conducted by the bureau’s intelligence wing. They added that the apprehended suspects were identified as Mohammad Ayaz and Tahir Mehmood. The sources further said that the accused persons had involvement in minting Rs80 million from certain people. Further investigation is underway. The arrests of the suspects were not disclosed till the fling of this story.
