HAFIZABAD-Corrupt Municipal Committee officials have increased the extortion amount from encroachers especially pushcart venders here.

An MC staffer was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Establishment on the charge of extorting Rs3,000 per month as bribe from a pushcart owner. According to ACE Circle Officer, Fida Hussain of Rail Bazaar had submitted an application to the ACE that Anti-Encroachment Inspector Amanullah used to extract Rs2,000 per month from the pushcart owner and now he was demanding Rs3000. Thereupon, Circle Officer ACE Shahid Mahmood along with a judicial magistrate raided the place and caught him red-handed while accepting gratification from the complainant. The raiding party also recovered marked currency notes from the accused and registered a case against him.

Encroachment on the city roads has been multiplied due to the collusion of a mafia with the abetment of some corrupt officials of the MC Hafizabad. Although the newly posted DC has directed the anti-encroachment staff to remove the encroachments on the busy roads, some of the personnel have increased 'bhatta' from the encroachers.

WOMEN GET CATTLE: As many as 200 widows of Hafizabad have been handed over 200 buffaloes and calves at a simple but impressive ceremony.

The chief guest MNA Mian Shahid Hussain Bhatti and MPA Ch Asadullah Arain said that besides empowering the widows and poor women, this programme would go a long way in the provision of pure milk and meat as well as to enable them to meet their domestic affairs.

The Director General Livestock Ghulam Muhammad Gill said that this programme would enable the poor widows and poor women to stand on their feet. He said that in case of death of any cattle, the widows would be provided another cattle so as to enable them to make their livelihood continuously.

CONDOLENCE: Zaman Ansari, the president of Powerlooms Workers Union Hafizabad, died of cardiac arrest. He was laid to rest in the Railway Line graveyard in the presence of large number of labour unionists, workers, owners of powerlooms, social and political workers.

MPA Malik Fiaz Ahmad Awan, ex-Provincial Minister Ch. Shoukat Ali Bhatti, President Markazi Anjuman Tajran Sheikh Muhammad Amjad and office bearers of different traders and labour unions have condoled his death and expressed their heartfelt sympathies with the members of the bereaved family. They paid rich tributes to the departed soul for his untiring struggle for the protection of rights of workers.
