Journalists to be part of rights body

LAHORE - Provincial Minister for Human Rights and Minority Affairs Khalil Tahir Sandhu on Saturday presented a booklet to media persons in the Punjab Assembly.  The booklet has been prepared by the Department of Human Rights. At a meet the press in Press Gallery of the Punjab Assembly, the minister briefed the media about initiatives taken by the department to protect human rights all over the province.

Sandhu said that journalists would be part of the provincial human rights commission. He said that millions of rupees had been allocated this year for brilliant students from minorities. Implementation of five percent quota for minorities in government jobs has been ensured, he said.  The minister said the Punjab government had taken various initiatives and done effective legislation to protect rights of minorities. He said the Punjab government had set up a taskforce to fast-forward women empowerment agendas, including working closely with UN Women to create policy environment for women informal workers in the province.  Minority representative Shahzad Munshi, HRMA Secretary Asim Iqbal, media persons and officers of the Human Rights Department were also present there.
