Doctors and paramedical staff took out rallies and held sit-ins against the police failure to arrest the murderers of Dr Shahid Nazir across the district here the other day.

Call for the protest was given by the Pakistan Medical Association Mandi Bahauddin to condemn the killing of Dr Shahid Nazir who was gunned down during his attempt to thwart the kidnapping of his father, also a doctor at a private hospital a couple of days ago.

The lawyers, ex-servicemen, traders and members of civil society joined the main rally to show solidarity with doctors. The rally participants raised slogans against police over its failure to trace and arrest the murderers.

Addressing the rally, speakers accused the police of inaction, saying that the police failed to control crime in the district. The rally started from the DHQ Hospital and ended in front of press club.

On the other hand, DSP Sultan along with a police contingent reached the spot and held negotiations with the PMA leaders. He apprised the protesting doctors of strenuous efforts being made to trace and nick the culprits. He informed that the investigators have found some leads and hopefully the accused would be arrested soon.

Following the DSP assurance, participants of the rally dispersed. However, the PMA District President set a deadline of three days for the arrest of the accused, threatening that failure to meet the deadline would force the medics to launch a countrywide protest.

The lawyers also observed strike to show solidarity with the doctors.
