Power we need

Pakistan has been facing serious challenges in energy sector for the past two years. Due to insufficient number of dams, power generation by steam is limited and Pakistan's economy is not in a position to sustain generation through use of furnace oil. We need to develop power generation methods that use country's indigenous resources. Geological surveys show Pakistan has world's second largest coal deposit in Thar that can serve our energy demand for decades if utilized properly. Another option is that of the bio-gas, a green energy resource that can help utilities and industry cut their energy costs. In the European countries, Germany is the largest producer of bio-gas. Pakistan should start collaborating with Germany to acquire the necessary technology. Long-term planning that includes construction of new dams must go on also if we are to meet the demand of power as well as water in the future. -MUDASSAR SHAHID, Lahore, via e-mail, January 2.
