LAHORE - The 10th of Muharram was observed, the other day with religious zeal and devotion throughout the country to mark supreme sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) at Karbala along with his family members and companions on 61st Hijra for the cause of justice, truth, righteousness and to safeguard the religion Islam. They fought against forces of Yazid instead of surrendering to the wrong. The Shiite and Sunni communities observed the day with their traditional ways. Majalis and sittings in the memory of the Imam (AS) were held in the city where people paid tributes to the martyrs. Processions of Alam and Tazias were also brought out in which thousands of mourners participated who were beating their chests, some of them with iron chain to exhibit extreme faithfulness with the martyrs of Karbala. People also distributed sweat meal and prayed for the solidarity and integrity of the country and the nation. They also reiterated their pledge to unite, rise above sectarianism and fight the oppressors. The participants and speakers during procession condemned US and Israel for mass massacre in Gaza and apathy of the Muslims world. The American flag was also burnt at a number of places. In Lahore, hundreds of Zuljannah processions were brought out from different places and the main procession in this connection was taken out from Nisar Haveli which travelled through its traditional routes in the city. Throughout the night, the procession visited dozens of Imambargahs in Mohallah Swhian Mochi gate and gathered at Chowk Nawab Sahib at the time of Fajr prayer. After the prayers, the mourners strengthened by new contingents set on its route through Lakr Mandi, Chohatta Mufi Baqar, Old Kotwali, Kashmiri bazaar and reached Rang Mahal at the time of Zohr prayer where the mourners offered prayer and scholars addressed them. Later, the procession started it travel from Rang Mahal and passed through Soha Bazaar, Paniwala Talab, Mohallah Water Works, Bazaar Hakeeman, Tehsil Bazaar and reached Bhati gate in the evening and culminated at Karbala Gamay Shah around 7:00 pm. District administration had made tight security arrangements as police personnel guarded the procession through out the day and police patrolled the city roads on 10th of Muharram while various NGOs and people set up milk and drinking water and eatables stalls throughout the routes. Ambulance and medical facilities and make shift hospitals were also established at the routes. There were official holidays on 9th and 10th Muharram.
