The Daily Nation of 27-12-2010 has reported that the closing of Baghbanpura and Bakar Mandi slaughter houses in the event of new slaughter house at Shahpur Kanjran has resulted in the slaughter of already dead animals by the butchers at the old sites. This has been attributed to lack of veterinary inspection at the old slaughter houses and reluctance of butchers to move to the new slaughter house being located at a long distance from far flung areas. It may be mentioned that a similar problem arose with the defunct Punjab Livestock, Dairy and Poultry Development Board when it opened a modern slaughter house at Sihala away from Rawalpindi while the butchers did not co-operate to bring their animals to Sihala and cart the meat back to Pindi. It is feared that a similar situation may arise at the new slaughter house at Shahpur Kanjran which needs to be tackled in the light of past experience. DR. MUHAMMAD YAQOOB BHATTI, Lahore, January 8.
