LAHORE - PML-Q President Senator Ch Shujaat Hussain has said that after October 12, 1999 action, Iftikhar Chaudhry as a senior judge of the Supreme Court, had empowered Pervez Musharraf to amend the Constitution except Islamic provisions for three years.

He said this while replying to questions from media people here on Thursday. Laying stress on his constitutional amendment presented in the Senate for using the words ‘breaker of the Constitution’ or any word other than traitor for an army chief, Shujaat cited three instances. Citing the first example, he questioned what would be reaction of an army jawan on duty at Siachen when he comes to know that his commander is a traitor because he is unaware of the constitutional provisions as to him treason means joining hands with the enemy. He further questioned when a child of civilian tells a child of a soldier that the boss of his father is a traitor what he would say in response to it. He raised yet another question, saying when any Pakistani in a foreign country is taunted that his army chief is a traitor what would be his condition.

Answering yet another a question, Shujaat called Prime Minister’s Youth Business Loan a good programme, adding it could be beneficial. He said the prime minister had appointed his daughter Maryam Nawaz as its head, who would fully try to run it with hard work and honesty. He said he could not say to what extent she would be successful in this respect but there was no doubt that the programme was good.

Expressing deep concern over increasing dearness, electricity and gas tariff and their acute shortage, Shujaat reiterated his demand for convening an all parties’ conference so that some headway could be made to resolve this highly sensitive issue.

Stressing the need for understanding and cooperation among all the parties over the problems faced by the nation and the country, the PML president said the values and traditions of the past were no more there. He cited the services of his father, Ch Zahoor Elahi, and Nawabzada Nasrullah Khan for cooperation and unity of the political parties.

He said health and education were among the most serious problems. He said Ch Pervaiz Elahi, as the Punjab chief minister, had taken revolutionary steps in the health and education sectors, but these were stopped despite the fact that international organisations had appreciated them.

PML-Q provincial general secretary Chaudhry Zaheeruddin said that the Punjab government’s failure to maintain law and order has turned the country’s largest province into a safe haven of the criminals as the incidents of extortion and kidnapping for ransom are on the rise.

Talking to media after a party meeting at Muslim League House here Thursday, he maintained the cases of extortion and kidnapping for ransom are increasing in Punjab, especially in Faisalabad, Lahore, Gujranwala and Rawalpindi districts, as maintaining law and order is not the government’s priority. He said that the government is utilising billions of rupees in the name of law and order, but the rulers have failed to protect the life and property of the citizens. He claimed there is a hundred per cent increase in the crime rate as compared to that of 2007 when the PML-Q was steering the provincial government.

The party leaders including Nasir Gill, Seemal Kamran, Nasir Gujjar and others were also present on this occasion.
