LAHORE - Ghazanfar Mehmood of Rawalpindi took lead in the national golf three-day trials to select a two-member national golf team for representing Pakistan in the Bangladesh Amateur Golf Championship began here on Thursday at the Defence Raya Golf Course.

Simultaneously, trials also began for selection of a lady player to represent the country in the Bangladesh Golf Championship in February. Hopefuls from across the country are vying for selection and include golf players with a handicap of four and below. And for amateur golfers, earning a handicap of four and below is by itself a big honour.

At the end of the first round, Ghazanfar ended the day with a score of gross 73. Mohsen Zafar of Royal Palm and Salman Jehangir of Lahore Gymkhana were accurate off the tees and bracketed at the same score of gross 75, two strokes behind the leader. Fakhar Imam (Defence Raya), Waseem Rana and Sajid Khan from Karachi were bunched together at a score of gross 77. At the score of 78 was M Rehman (Royal Palm) followed by Khalid Mehmood and Minhaj Maqsood at 79.  As for competition amongst ladies, Ghazala Yasmin stood out while her nearest competitors were Mrs Sameea Javed Ali and Maryama Khan.  The trials are being supervised by Brig Nayyar of Pakistan Golf Federation (PGF) and Brig Rao of Punjab Golf Association (PGA).
