Rabi crops to suffer due to water stress: Met Office

KARACHI : The Met Office on Thursday forecast that the availability of water in rain-fed area will be limited and therefore Rabi Crops, particularly wheat, are likely to suffer from water stress conditions. The Met Office in its precipitation forecast said that the situation demands that the available water resources may be judiciously utilized to meet the vital water requirements in the country.It said largely below normal rainfall but slightly above normal snowfall is expected in winter season this year. The Met office said that the probable winter that is January to March, precipitation is likely over Pakistan, on the basis of prevailing atmospheric circulation and expected global weather conditions.
Snowfall over the mountainous areas during winter is expected to occur 10 to 15 per cent more than the normal. Rainfall amount is estimated about 30 per cent less than the long period average (1961 to 2010) from January to March.
